Day 23 - Reading Room.

Day 23 - A picture of your favorite book.

I don't really read novels. And out of all of the books I have read, the only ones that have really made a strong impression on me are the children's books. Maybe because they were some of the first books I had ever read. Everyone loves the popular Green Eggs and Ham, written by Dr. Suess, The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, and Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. But one of my favorite books when I was a child, and still to this day, is Morris The Moose, written by Bernard Wiseman. So thank you Mr. Wiseman!

Recently, we spent most of our weekend watching General Conference. A conference held twice a year where we get to hear a living prophet, twelve apostles, and other church leaders speak to us and provide inspired guidance to our lives. When the written versions of the talks given over the weekend are published in the May 2011 issue of the Ensign, they will be my new favorite..book. If you could call them a book. Talks and stories put together and published. Sounds like a story book to me. Based on true stories, of course.

Katie's favorite books are the Harry Potter books, written by Joanne Kathleen Rowling. More specifically, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. She loves these books and reads them over and over! The only other books I know of that she reads more than once are the books from the Twilight Saga. But I think we can all agree that J. K. Rowling is a better writer than Stephanie Meyer. And I'm not hating on Stephanie Meyer. She had a pretty awesome dream that lead to the writing of the Twilight Saga. I wish I had a dream that lead me to millions. But J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series has led her to just over one billion. Harry Potter was created on paper while J. K. Rowling was a single mother traveling by train. She completed her first book-length manuscript on an old manual typewriter while she was unemployed and living on state benefits..and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was rejected twelve times by publisher's. I haven't read much from the Harry Potter series, but Katie is determined to make me read them. And believe me, I wish I had the time. I'm sure it will come. But right now, I have too many textbooks to study. One of the things Katie wants to do before she dies is to drink a butter beer. Enough said.

I think of life as a good book. The further you get into it, the more it begins to make sense.

  1. Gabe, Harry Potter is sweet. I didn't start the series until after the last book came out, so I wasn't always a fan, but I am now! The coolest thing about these books, is that they grow in maturity just like the original audience, and the characters. So when you start the series, you'll be reading a kids book, and when you finish the series, you'll be reading a young adults book. Very clever technique if you ask me.

  2. Yeah, I think I'm going to write a book myself..using the same technique. lol I've already got an idea. I've read chapters out of the Harry Potter books and I like her writing, but as soon as I have a break from math and science textbooks, I'm definitely going to read them from start to finish.
